Puppies

Your new puppy should visit a veterinarian as soon as possible. The initial visit will include a thorough physical examination to determine your puppy’s state of health. Dr. Chambers will check for external parasites (fleas, ticks, lice, ear mites) and for internal parasites (tapeworm, roundworm). Initial vaccinations will be administered and you will discuss the types of vaccinations your puppy needs, when they should be scheduled and receive advice about when your puppy should be spayed or neutered. This first health check will give your veterinarian the information she needs to advise you on your puppy’s diet and care.

FAQs About Puppies

What is the vaccine protocol for puppies?

Puppies receive 3 sets of boosters. Ideally, the first set is done at 8 weeks old, then every 4 weeks after. The first booster is DA2PPV combo vaccine. The second set is 2nd DA2PPV combo and Bordatella (kennel cough) and the third set is 3rd DA2PPV combo and rabies.

Why should I spay/neuter my puppy?

The decision to spay or neuter your puppy is an important one for dog owners. But it can be the single best decision you make for their long term welfare.

  • Spaying/Neutering your dog can improve their overall health
  • Spaying your female dog will prevent mammary tumors
  • Neutering your male dog will prevent prostate cancer
  • Prevent roaming
  • Reduce unruly behavior

Why should I microchip my puppy?

Micro chipping your dog is an excellent means of identification. It won’t fade over time like a tattoo or fall off like a tag. A needle is used to place a little chip under the animal’s skin, between the shoulder blades. That chip has a unique number on it that can be picked up and read by a scanner. The chip traces to your address and phone number.
